How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Advisory Committee for Geosciences (AC/GEO) provides the Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) with important information and insights regarding the impact of programs and other activities. AC/GEO also provides oversight of overall program management and performance. AC/GEO focused considerable attention on strategies for improving geoscience education at all levels, and it addressed approaches for broadening the diversity of geoscience research and educational communities. AC/GEO provided advice to the Director of the National Science Foundation regarding general issues relating to the operation and management of the Foundation, particularly with regard to large facilities. AC/GEO members also participated other directorate advisory committees and with the Environment, Research and Engineering advisory committee in special discussions. AC/GEO subcommittees conducted special examinations of approaches for integrating research and education in the geosciences and facilities needs over the next two decades. Division-related subcommittees oversaw the establishment and operation of committees of visitors (COVs), which performed detailed analyses of the management and operations of selected research sections and programs. Reports of these COVs and responses from the Assistant Director for Geosciences will be considered at AC/GEO's next meeting.
How is membership balanced?*Members of AC/GEO are selected to be representative of all scientific fields in the geosciences, and they are drawn from the full range of institutions with which geoscientists are associated, including academic institutions of varying sizes and private-sector firms. The committee also includes women and members of minority groups underrepresented in science and engineering. All members serve three-year terms, with about one-third of the committee being replaced each year.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Due to the importance of the AC GEO to the GEO and its division, two full committee meetings are held each year. At each meeting, time is allocated to discussions of division-related issues. Continuing AC GEO is essential to allow leading members of the geoscience communities that GEO serves to provide advice to and oversight of GEO programs and activities.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*AC GEO provides advice on GEO programs and activities and oversight of GEO program management and performance. No other organization has the appropriate range of expertise and knowledge to perform these functions.
Why close or partially close meetings?NA
Recommendation RemarksAdvisory Committee for Geosciences terminated on April 15, 2025, pursuant to Executive Order 14217, Commencing the Reduction of the Federal Bureaucracy, Section 2(g).
