How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee will advise, consult with, and make recommendations to the Secretary, the Assistant Secretary for Health, and the Director, NIH. The Committee will be held approximately three times within a fiscal year. Meetings will be open to the public except as determined by the Secretary at the request of the DFO in accordance with 5 U.S.C. 552b(c) and 41 C.F.R. 102-3.155 including specifying the specific exception(s) that justifies closure. Notice of all meetings will be given to the public. In the event a portion of a meeting is closed to the public, as determined by the Secretary, in accordance with the Government in the Sunshine Act (5 U.S.C. 552b(c)) and the Federal Advisory Committee Act, an annual report of closed or partially-closed meetings will be prepared which will contain, at a minimum, a list of members and their business addresses, the Committee’s functions, dates and places of meetings, and a summary of the Committee’s activities and recommendations made during the fiscal year.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee will consist of the Secretary, or designee, as Chair, who will serve as a nonvoting ex-officio member, and up to 20 members appointed by the Secretary (appointed members). The appointed members will consist of authorities who are knowledgeable in the fields of research pertinent to the NIH mission and individuals selected from the academic and private sector research community, as well as individuals selected from the general public.

Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The members of the Advisory Committee to the Director have experience, current expertise, and abilities pertinent to the NIH mission that cannot be obtained from NIH staff or from other established sources.

Recommendation RemarksMembers: Currently, there are no members on the ACD. Membership was terminated on 5/27/2025 . There are 20 vacancies.

Ex Officio Members: Dr. Bertagnolli's term ended 1/17/2025. Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, Director, NIH was appointed Ex Officio chair this fiscal year 04/01/2025.
