How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*	The Study Section accomplishes its purpose as a result of: 1) qualified scientific review administrators and support staff; 2) continued success in recruiting leading researchers in occupational safety and health for membership on the committee; 3) ample meeting and logistic resources; 4) appropriate coordination with related National Institutes of Health study sections; 5) and consistency in development and application of administrative rules and guidelines for peer review among the various Department of Health and Human Services institutes and centers. The main measure of success is acknowledgment by the scientific community that the highest quality applications in occupational safety and health are being identified by the Study Section. NOTE: The Study Section received 112 applications and reviewed 64 grant applications, requesting $95,950,243.00 in support. The total amount awarded for FY24 was $3,545,695.00.
How is membership balanced?*	The Study Section is balanced in terms of female and ethnic/minority representation, as well as geographic distribution. The Study Section is composed of 20 public members with expertise in occupational medicine and nursing, industrial hygiene, occupational safety and engineering, toxicology, chemistry, safety and health education, ergonomics, epidemiology, psychology, and pulmonary pathology/physiology. These 20 members are usually augmented by 14-18 consultant reviewers to manage the application review load per member and to supplement the expertise of the public members.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*	The Study Section meets three times a year and reviews between 40 and 60 applications per round in all of the specified subject areas. Meetings are very relevant. There are no other committees at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that review occupational safety and health research applications. In general, research applications submitted to NIOSH are reviewed by the Study Section. Otherwise, assignments depend on whether occupational safety and health issues are central or peripheral to an application.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*	The Study Section provides advice and makes recommendations to the Secretary, HHS; the Director, CDC; and the Director, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, on scientific, research, and training areas related to occupational safety and health, which are in need of special emphasis and expertise to meet such needs. The committee provides review for scientific and technical merit of all research and demonstration grant applications, as well as fellowships in the program areas related to the cause, prevention, and control of diseases and injuries in the occupational environment; provides review for educational, scientific, and technical merit of safety and occupational health training grant applications; and recommends grant applications, which merit support, to the appropriate national advisory councils. There is no direct duplication of the committee review activities with other committees.
Why close or partially close meetings?	Meetings are closed since the subject matter is considered proprietary and confidential under the terms of Section 552b(c)(4) and (6), Title 5, U.S.C., and Section 10(d) of Public Law 92-463.
