How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*This Board assesses the quality of the Clinical Center’s intramural research programs, evaluates the productivity and performance of our research physicians and scientists, and reviews necessary administrative functions for the operation of a highly effective intramural research program. The Board is composed of scientific and medical experts, all nationally recognized in their field of study and clinical practice. The Board provides indispensable evaluation and advisory functions in the management of the Clinical Center’s intramural research programs.
How is membership balanced?*The Board consists of outstanding authorities knowledgeable in the basic and clinical medical sciences related to the departments of the Clinical Center. The advisory role of the Board is scientific and substantive. The Board, through periodic visits to the laboratories, assesses the research in progress and evaluates productivity and performance of staff scientists.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Board generally meets twice annually to evaluate one or more Clinical Center Departments during each visit and for the peer review of research activities on a rotating basis as required by the PHS Act. The Board met twice during FY25 to review the research programs of the Radiology and Imaging Sciences Department (RADIS) and the Translational Biobehavioral and Health Promotion Branch (TBHP).
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*This Board is composed of recognized biomedical and/or behavioral research authorities from outside the NIH in order to secure unbiased and objective evaluation of intramural research programs. Their recommendations are invaluable because the complex nature of research in each Clinical Center Department requires a unique balance and breadth of expertise not readily available without bias from within the NIH staff or from other U.S. Government resources.
Why close or partially close meetings? The meetings of the Board were closed for the review, discussion, and evaluation of individual programs and projects conducted by the Clinical Center, including consideration of personnel qualifications and performance, the competence of individual investigators, and similar items, the disclosure of which would constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy. Section 552b(c)(6) of the Government in the Sunshine Act permits the closing of meetings where discussion could reveal personal information, the disclosure of which would constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy.
Recommendation RemarksCommittee Function: Other - Peer Review of intramural research laboratories and personnel.

The DFO and Committee Decision Maker positions are held by the same individual based on assigned duties within the Clinical Center.

Member(s): In FY 2025, three current members appointments were terminated on 3/21/25 (Dr. Dolores Njoku (Chair) and Dr. Amy J. Houtrow). Dr. Reshma Jagsi was approved to be reappointed as Chair on 7/1/2025 with her term ending on 11/30/2025.

Reports: This committee did not produce any reports during this fiscal year.
