How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The NASA Advisory Council (NAC) is one of two principal Agency advisory committees that report directly to the NASA Administrator. The most recent Council major reorganization took place during FY 2014. The Council is supported by committees, subcommittees and task forces, as appropriate. The Council typically holds three meetings per year. During Council meetings, the members receive regular and special topic briefings from the Agency leadership, and reports from Council committees covering the breadth of NASA programs, projects, policies and plans. The Council develops findings and recommendations for the NASA Administrator, and deliberates in meetings open to the public. Approved Council findings and recommendations are then transmitted to the NASA Administrator for Agency consideration. The NASA Administrator responds back to the Council with the Agency written response for each Council recommendation. In addition to the Council DFO and committee DFOs, the NAC is supported by support contractor personnel for meetings, travel and logistics as noted under "other costs."
How is membership balanced?*Members of the Council are selected for their subject-matter expertise and broad strategic perspectives. Members come from academia, private industry and former U.S. Government senior officials across all NASA-relevant areas of expertise as well as across multiple backgrounds, geographies, and career stages. In addition, the Council has two ex officio members representing the National Academy of Sciences (Chair, Space Studies Board) and the National Academy of Engineering (Chair, Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board).
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Council typically meets two to three times per year. The NASA Administrator (or designee) attends the Council meetings, schedule permitting.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Council is unique in that it is the only NASA Federal advisory committee that produces findings and recommendations across the broad range of Agency programs, projects, policies and plans.
Why close or partially close meetings?N/A
Recommendation RemarksDiane Rausch served as the DFO for the Committee through June 2024. Ms. Krauk was officially appointed as DFO and Agency Committee Management Official on July 15, 2024.
