How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The role the National Cancer Institute’s Council of Research Advocates (NCRA) was to identify and respond to issues and challenges facing the Institute and the cancer research community, at the request of the NCI Director. Board members contributed non-scientific perspectives to advance patient-focused research, including identifying new approaches, fostering innovation, addressing risks, and strengthening collaborations with non-scientist stakeholders. In FY2025, NCRA held no meetings due to the committee’s termination.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee consisted of up to 16 members, including a Chair appointed by the NCI Director. Members were cancer research advocates with direct experience in the cancer community and an expert understanding of the non-scientific burdens of cancer research, as well as the perspectives of patients, researchers, policymakers, and advocates. This expertise was gained through work in cancer advocacy, affiliation with professional societies or research foundations, experience as healthcare professionals focused on cancer and related diseases, or service as thought leaders in cancer research and care delivery.

Members: Member term end dates differ from those reported in the FY2024 ACR due to the committee’s termination. Two members were on-boarded in FY2025 [Katie Coleman and Amanda Haddock].

Agency Feedback*YesAccess CommentInformation on the NCRA was available on the NCI Division of Extramural Activities website (http://deainfo.nci.nih.gov/advisory/ncra/ncra.htm), which included each committee’s charter, minutes, agenda, roster, future meeting dates, presentations, and reports. NCRA meetings were also accessible to the public, live and on demand, via the NIH Videocast (http://videocast.nih.gov/).
Agency Feedback Comment*E-mail updates and presentations at the meetings. NCI leadership gave feedback directly to the NCRA through meetings with the full advisory group. The NCI community was made aware of NCRA activities through NCI’s Office of Advocacy Relations. Information was provided to the public at each meeting. The public was able to view information related to the Committee through the NCRA’s official website.Narrative Description*The NCI coordinates the National Cancer Program, supporting research, training, information dissemination, and programs addressing the causes, diagnosis, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and continuing care of cancer and its impact on patients and families. The NCI Council of Research Advocates (NCRA) was the only NCI federal advisory committee composed entirely of advocate leaders. Members were selected for their expertise on issues critical to the cancer research community. NCRA advised the NCI Director by identifying challenges, enhancing community input, optimizing outreach, and promoting collaborations to improve research outcomes. Members also contributed unique perspectives by proposing new approaches, fostering innovation, addressing risks and barriers, and anticipating unintended consequences of NCI decisions.
