How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*In accordance with the NIH Revitalization Act of 1993, members of the Committee provide leadership by reviewing the proposed priorities of the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH), research and career development programs, Conferences, Outreach and Inclusion activities on an annual basis. Committee discussions in FY25 included updates on ORWH activities and priorities; an update from the Acting Director of the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI) on DPCPSI Vision and Priorities; an update from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) Director, National Library of Medicine (NLM) Deputy Director, and NIH Small Business Education and Entrepreneurial Development (SEED) Office Director on their roles in supporting women’s health research; a special update from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM); panel presentations on Data Science and Technology, Engineering, and Innovation in Women’s Health Research; and concept clearances for two ORWH programs. Lastly, members of the Committee also reviewed and commented on selected content of the FY24 – FY25 NIH Biennial Report.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee will consist of no fewer than 12, and not more than 18 members, appointed by the Director, NIH, who are not officers or employees of the Federal Government, from among physicians, practitioners, scientists and other health professionals, whose clinical practice, research specialization, or professional expertise include a significant focus on research and the health of women. A majority of the appointed members will be women. Members have research interests and responsibilities paralleling those of the Office of Research on Women's Health.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*In accordance with the NIH Revitalization Act of 1993, the Advisory Committee on Research on Women’s Health (ACRWH) meets no less than one time within a fiscal year and the dates are set well in advance to ensure maximum participation. In FY2025, the Committee met three times: October 8 and December 9, 2024, and June 17, 2025. This legislation also established the governing structure of the ACRWH in providing external input on how to improve and prioritize research that addresses women’s health to NIH. During those meetings, the Committee voted on concept clearances for two ORWH programs.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The quality, scope, and balance of advice from this Committee cannot be obtained from NIH staff or from other established sources because the membership of the Committee is constituted to meet the specific requirements of the mandated mission of the Committee by the NIH Revitalization Act of 1993. The ACRWH is composed of both scientific and public members who provide in-depth knowledge on topics focused on research on the health of women, sex as a biological variable, and public opinions combined with a strong background in the history of women’s health research at NIH.
Why close or partially close meetings?N/A
Recommendation RemarksMembers Rotating Off/On-Boarding: Three members rotated-off (Drs. Templeton, Jagsi, Simon).

On an annual basis, members of the Committee provide advice on all of the above by reviewing and contributing to the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) proposed research priorities; research and career development programs; conferences; and outreach and inclusion activities.

NIH’s mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability. NIH works toward that mission by: conducting research in its own laboratories; supporting the research of non-Federal scientists in universities, medical schools, hospitals, and research institutions throughout the country and abroad; helping in the training of research investigators; and fostering communication of medical and health sciences information. Section 492 of the PHS Act states that The Secretary...shall by regulation require appropriate technical and scientific peer review of - (A) applications...; and (B) biomedical and behavioral research and development contracts...
