How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee advises the National Science Foundation (NSF) on the merit of proposals requesting financial support for research and research related activities. The panel reviews proposals submitted to NSF under the purview of the Division of Industrial Innovation and Partnerships (IIP). Members review, evaluate and provide written recommendations on proposals as part of the selection process for awards. Members may evaluate and provide advice on the progress of awarded proposals.
How is membership balanced?*Members are selected to be representative of the scientific areas encompassed by IIP activities. Every effort is made to achieve a gender diverse membership with representation including individuals from underrepresented groups and different geographic regions.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*There were 213 meetings that occurred throughout Fiscal Year 2023.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The panel provides the unique opportunity for the reviewers to provide judgments about the comparative merits within a group of proposals and advice to the Program Officers on the merits of each proposal. Ad hoc mail reviewers with specific expertise can be selected to give a thorough technical review of a proposal.

The involvement of knowledgeable peers from outside the Foundation in the review of proposals is the keystone of NSF’s merit review system.
