Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*Five meetings were held in FY-23. Discussion focused on (1) U.S. Antarctic Vessel Updates (2) COVID Protocols for the 2023/2024 Antarctic Field Season (3) South Pole Prioritization (4) Policy and International Engagement (5) OPP Advisory Committee Merger
How is membership balanced?*Members of the Office Advisory Committee are selected to be representative of all scientific fields in the polar sciences, and they are drawn from the full range of institutions with which polar scientists are associated, including academic institutions of varying sizes, research institutes, other federal agencies, and a local (Native American) commission. The committee also includes women and members of minority groups underrepresented in science and engineering. All members serve three-year terms, with about one-third of the committee being replaced each year. Members of the Committee of Visitors includes individuals with expertise in all areas of sciences involved, selected for broad geographical distribution within an appropriate mix of colleges and universities. Represented are women and minorities, plus industrial scientists.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Two full Committee meetings are generally held each year. In addition, one or more Committee of Visitors (COV) meetings are held every four years.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The polar regions and polar research are specialized and unique areas. This advice and information must be provided by knowledgeable people who are familiar with polar operations, issues, and research. While OPP does use a number of individual outside advisors and sits on other interagency committees pertaining to the Arctic/Antarctic, this group is the only means for assuring that NSF's best interests are considered.
Why close or partially close meetings?N/A
