Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Advisory Committee provides the Directorate with valuable scientific, educational, and management advice for the purpose of enhancing the overall impact and performance of its programs in the mathematical and physical sciences. An important function of the Committee is to conduct oversight reviews of the impact, performance, and management of the programs in the mathematical and physical sciences. In FY 2024, the Committee continued to focus on strategic planning for mathematical and physical sciences.
How is membership balanced?*Representation on the Committee is diverse and includes individuals from all MPS disciplines. The professional affiliations of Committee members include universities, industry, and other appropriate organizations. Members from the academic community typically include faculty and administrators from research universities and predominantly undergraduate institutions. Successful efforts have also been made to include on the Committee women and members of ethnic and racial groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Two advisory committee meetings were held in FY 2024. Maintaining the Committee will allow for the continuation of advice to and oversight of Directorate programs.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*Given that the Committee is required to provide advice on priorities and opportunities across all the disciplines supported by the Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences, it is a unique entity. There is no existing organization with the appropriate range of expertise and knowledge.
Why close or partially close meetings?N/A
Recommendation RemarksAdvisory Committee for Mathematical and Physical Sciences terminated on April 15, 2025, pursuant to Executive Order 14217, Commencing the Reduction of the Federal Bureaucracy, Section 2(g).
