How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Board may be invited to join the Ombudsman at Regional Regulatory Fairness Roundtables and public hearings to hear from small businesses on their experiences with enforcement or compliance challenges with Federal agencies. Additionally the Board, through the National Ombudsman, hears from Federal agency representatives and surfaces regulatory concerns of small businesses to Federal agencies.
How is membership balanced?*The Small Business Regulatory Enforcement Fairness Act of 1996 (SBREFA) requires that the Board consist of 5 members, who are owners, operators or officers of small businesses. Not more than 3 members shall be from the same political party. Executive Branch and congressional employees are precluded from membership.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Regional Regulatory Fairness Boards convene an Annual Meeting once a year. Additionally, the Board holds at least one public hearing per year to hear from small businesses and trade associations. The hearing may take place in Washington DC or other regions across the Nation. Board Members may participate in roundtables and hearings held in their respective regions. The Board Member also participates in conference calls with the National Ombudsman periodically.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Boards' advisory functions are mandated by SBREFA. The Boards listen to small businesses within their respective regions, assess the enforcement and compliance actions taken by Federal agencies, and makes recommendations to create a more favorable regulatory climate for small businesses to grow and thrive.
