Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee meets annually to review nominations and provide a recommendation to the NSF Director and the National Science Board for the current year's Waterman Awardee.
How is membership balanced?*The Committee is comprised of 18 members, 4 of whom are ex officio (the Chairman, National Science Board; Presidents of the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering; and the Director, NSF). The 14 appointed members are from among recognized leaders in the various fields of science and engineering from among those in which the Award is given.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee meets once a year. The Committee receives nominations from all disciplines supported by the NSF and provides expertise to review and recommend from a wide variety of programs.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Committee is composed of outstanding working scientists from all disciplines who are knowledgeable about current and on-going research programs throughout the country. Other Advisory Committees established at the NSF are directed toward specific disciplines and/or programs.
Why close or partially close meetings? The nominations of performance of employees reviewed and discussed include information of a personal nature where disclosure would have constituted unwarranted invasions of personal privacy.

Agency Feedback Comment*Although the Advisory Committee members may not receive direct feedback, the committee manager provides information on awards made by the agency.Narrative Description*The NSF mission is set out in the NSF Act of 1950, which authorizes and directs the Agency to initiate and support: basic scientific research and research fundamental to the engineering process; and science and engineering education programs at all levels and in all fields of science and engineering. The involvement of knowledgeable peers from outside the Foundation in the review of nominations is the keystone of NSF’s review system. Their judgments of the extent to which nominations address the eligibility criteria is vital for informing NSF staff and influencing award recommendations.
