How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*	The Presidential Historical Records Preservation Act of 2008 calls for the establishment of a Founding Fathers Advisory Committee to advise the Archivist of the United States on matters pertaining to the Founding Fathers documentary editing projects, namely the papers of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and George Washington. The Committee is charged with reviewing the progress of the Founding Fathers editorial projects and developing project completion goals (in consultation with the projects), receiving regular progress reports from the projects, and conducting formal annual reviews and reports to Congress, including any legislative or executive actions the Advisory Committee may recommend to facilitate project completion. The Committee, which held its first meeting 12/13/2010, will carry out its charge through a series of meetings, studies, and consultations with the editorial projects and other subject matter experts.
How is membership balanced?*	The Act calls for the Committee to be comprised of 3 nationally-recognized historians who will serve as its members for up to 8 years. In meeting this charge, individuals have been selected who have been recognized by their peers as exemplifying excellence in scholarship in the field of American history. They have either been recipients of major awards in the field of history or have been finalists for such awards in recent years. Further, to ensure that the Advisory Committee is well-balanced in its composition and expertise, members were selected from both public and private academic institutions, demonstrated prior experience in serving on successful boards or advisory bodies, and bring varied levels of experience in new media and online publication.
