How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee will be examining the relevant facts and circumstances concerning the root causes of the Deepwater Horizon explosion and developing options to guard against, and mitigate the impact of, any oil spills associated with offshore drilling in the future. This may include recommending improvements to federal laws, regulations, and industry practices.
How is membership balanced?*The committe members have expertise in enviromental issues, engineering, and offshore energy development. In addition, several were involved in dealing with aspects of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Members have experience in the Executive and Legislative branches of the Federal governemnt as well as business, non-profit organizations and academia.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Committee is required to meet not less than once a month. The meetings will be a major source of information about the impact of the oil spill and potential ways to mitigate the impact of future offshore drilling.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Committee is required by Presidential Order, EO-13543. The Committee recommendations are considered important to the nation's ability to produce offshore oil and natural gas safely with minimal environmental impact.
