How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Global Change Research Act of 1990 (Public Law 101-606, Section 106) requires the Government to submit a scientific assessment on a number of different topics relating to global climate change. The Climate Change Science Program (CCSP) is responsible for coordinating and directing the scientific assessments across 13 federal agencies. NOAA is managing the CCSP and is responsible for producing a comprehensive scientific assessment, as well as having responsibility for a number of the topics. This committee will produce an additional integrative document which synthesizes the information contained in the 21 synthesis and assessment product reports, the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports, and other recent results that have appeared in the scientific literature.
How is membership balanced?*The committee shall not exceed 35 members to be appointed by the Under Secretary of NOAA, to assure a balanced representation of scientific views among preeminent scientists, educators, and experts reflecting the full scope of the scientific issues addressed in this Synthesis and Assessment Product.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*During FY 08, the committee held two meetings that resulted in the production and release of the first draft of the Unified Systhesis Product for review and public comment, and one post-review meeting to consider review comments and plan for changes needed in a second draft. At least one additional meeting will be held in FY 09 prior to release of the second draft for another review and comment period. These meetings are absolutely essential to the production of a satisfactory final product.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The committee is necessary to comply with the Global Change Research Act of 1990 (Public Law 101-606, Section 106) which requires the Government to submit a scientific assessment on a number of different topics relating to global climate change.
