Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

Legislation Status
How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Commission will provide advice and recommendations to the National Science Board (NSB) on a broad range of policy issues dealing with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education. The Board expects the scope of the Commission’s advice and recommendations to address pre-K-16 education The Commission will employ various data-gathering tools, including public hearings to solicit the opinions of experts in relevant disciplines. The Commission will analyze the information it collects to develop a report to the Board that will include advice and recommendations on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education
How is membership balanced?*The membership will be balanced to reflect the wide diversity of professional specialties relevant to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education. The Board will invite and request nominations from the public.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Estimated Number of Meetings per Year - 3 Estimated Total Meetings - 6
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*No other agency has a statutory responsibility for education across all of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines. The National Science Board’s Commission will address STEM education with a forward-looking scope that is beyond that of existing NSB or NSF committees. The existing NSB and NSF committees focus on oversight for education and are responsible for specific ongoing NSF programs. The information sought by the National Science Board’s Commission will encompass all of these science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines and is not available from other sources. The Commission will conduct data gathering activities that will ensure the Board has recommendations for all relevant fields based on high quality data that can be compared across these fields.
Why close or partially close meetings?
Recommendation RemarksAt its March 30, 2007 meeting, the National Science Board determined that the Board Commission on 21st Century Education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fulfilled its charge to provide the Board with advice and recommendations for a "bold new action plan" for U.S. K-12 STEM education. The Board discharged the Commission as a Federal advisory committee with thanks to the Commission Co-Chairmen and Members.
