How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The NASA Education Advisory Committee (EAC) drew on the expertise of its members and other sources to provide advice and make recommendations to the Office of the Chief Education Officer. The EAC functioned solely as an advisory body and will comply fully with the provisions of the FACA.
How is membership balanced?*Membership was selected to ensure a balanced representation of expertise and points of view in scientific, technical, education and programmatic fields relevant to education.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Estimated number of meetings per year: 3. Future EAC meetings were to be scheduled to follow the NASA Advisory Council (NAC) meetings. This would have allowed the EAC to benefit from the guidance and discussions of the NAC.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The NASA Administrator determined that the EAC was in the public interest in connection with the performance of Agency duties. Expertise and points of view in scientific, technical, education and programmatic fields relevant to education were necessary for the Agency.
Why close or partially close meetings?EAC meetings were open to the public in accordance with FACA rules, unless an administrative work session was called.
Recommendation RemarksThis advisory committee was terminated as part of the overall NASA advisory committee restructuring effort that took place during 2005.

Outcome CommentThe Agency's research and development related to the Vision for Space Exploration relies on a workforce that is knowledgeable, and prepared to enter NASA's highly competitive fields of service. This workforce must reflect the investments of educational and research resources of the Agency. To this extent, students and faculty engaging in research funded by the Agency must reflect the Agency's commitment to keeping America's workforce ready for challenging requirements of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics community. Our stakeholders trust us to make sound investments of resources, that will support NASA and the country in science and technology. The EAC is committed to ensuring that its advice reflects good stewardship of the taxpayers' dollars. A high priority of the Office of Education is to ensure that research capabilities of participants of the various programs/projects is directly aligned to the Agency's science and technological mission requirements. This commitment extends from activities that engage elementary and middle school students to post-doctoral programs. Parallel to this commitment is the development and revisiting of strategies that determine the most cost-effective methods of delivering services. The EAC explores service vehicles that will reach the widest possible audiences, and include eEducation to reach remote communities as well as traditional modes of delivery. It is important to the EAC that the broadest and most diverse stakeholders are represented in its initiatives. To this end, the delivery of services, the timeliness of delivery, and the ability to deliver is largely contingent upon the availability of funding.Number Of Grants Recommended0

The wealth of expertise on the Committee reflects a broad and diverse constituency in K-12, Informal, Higher Education, and eEducation. The Committee Chair is informed, and provides leadership to the members to assist them in supporting the Vision for Space Exploration. The Vision has been the basis on which discussions, and advice have been centered. The EAC determines strategies for aligning each of the areas of education to the Vision, and seeks ways to articulate the Agency's priorities to the community. The Committee members are themselves involved in space science, and have a strong interest in advancing the Agency's mission through education programs and projects.
