Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

Agency Recommendation*Terminate
Legislation to Terminate RequiredNo
Legislation StatusEnacted
How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Aerospace Medicine and Occupational Health Advisory Committee (AMOHAC)advised the NASA Administrator through the NASA Advisory Council (NAC) on Agency policies, programs and plans relative to NASA’s responsibilities for aerospace medicine and occupational health. In aerospace medicine, Committee responsibilities broadly included advising NASA on all health and medical practice as well as health related research requirements and direction in support of human space flight. In occupational health, Committee advice covered compliance with externally mandated statutory requirements and the provision of effective health services for employees.
How is membership balanced?*At least one member of the Office of Biological and Physical Research Advisory Committee, the Space Flight Advisory Committee, and the Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel was appointed to the Committee to ensure robust communication and integration between these advisory groups on all matters affecting health. Membership was balanced with experts representing aerospace medicine, occupational health, clinical medicine practice, and medical management.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Estimated number of meetings per year: 2. Estimated total meetings: 6.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Committee advised the NASA Administrator on crucial, uncharted areas impacting short and long distance space travel and made recommendations shaping the strategic and tactical direction of Agency occupational health, improving return on investment and performance-based decision making in the human capital arena. The collective Committee expertise in such selective areas as atmospheric and space flight, occupational health epidemiological tracking, clinical research in support of space medicine, the practice of medicine in extreme environments, bioethics, and medical practice development is not sufficiently resident within NASA. NASA requires consensus advice from experts in these disciplines to optimize the execution of our broad range of related responsibilities.
Why close or partially close meetings?
Recommendation RemarksThis advisory committee was terminated as part of the overall NASA advisory committee restructuring effort that took place during 2005.

Agency Feedback Comment*The Committee Chair presented findings and recommendations at the NASA Advisory Committee (NAC)for disposition.Narrative Description*NASA is obligated to its stakeholders to meet the intent of the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958, which established the Agency for the purpose of expanding human knowledge for the benefit of all humankind. As such, NASA employs a process of checks and balances, including health and medical policy direction, technical requirements and standards to maximize health protection within mission constraints at all levels, and to assist NASA in focusing on biomedical research efforts. The Committee drew on the expertise of its members and other sources to provide advice and made recommendations to the Chief Health and Medical Officer on plans, policies, programs, and other matters pertinent to the Agency’s responsibilities for aerospace medicine and occupational health, including direction and requirements of clinical research in support of human space flight, standards for health and medical practice, and medical and ethical standards for human and animal research and clinical practice.
