Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

Legislation StatusEnacted
How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The NASA Earth Systems Science and Applications Advisory Committee (ESSAAC) reviewed the NASA Earth Science program, identified scientific and implementation issues and plans for all programmatic activities, and assessed progress in implementing the NASA Earth Science goals and objectives.
How is membership balanced?*The ESSAAC membership reflected a broad scientific constituency involved in the NASA Earth Science scientific program. It included representatives of the broad community of applications users, as well as experts in scientific information systems and remote sensing technologies. Members represented the scientific disciplines of research on the atmosphere, land, and oceans.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The ESSAAC normally met twice a year. It conducted periodic reassessments of NASA Earth Science strategic direction in response to improved scientific understanding, evolving technology, new opportunities in commercial, international, and operational arenas, and budget constraints.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*ESSAAC was the only direct external source of specific scientific advice to the NASA Earth Science program, although various boards and committees of the National Research Council/National Academy of Sciences continue to provide general guidance to Federal agencies on scientific issues addressed by the U.S. Climate Change Science Program.
Why close or partially close meetings? Not applicable as all ESSAAC meetings were open.
Recommendation RemarksThis advisory committee was terminated as part of the overall NASA advisory committee restructuring effort that took place during 2005.
