Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The committee met to hear presentations from individual experts in the scientific and technical aspects of their charter and to develop a strategic roadmap focused on the search for Earth-like planets and habitable environments around neighboring stars. The committee members discussed these presentations in the context of their own expertise and identified areas to be studied further between meetings, with the intention of producing a roadmap identifying critical investigations to be undertaken by NASA to further specific areas of scientific inquiry.
How is membership balanced?*The membership appointments attempted to strike a balanced distribution, suitable for its specific focus, with broad representation from government, industry, and the academic community.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The committee met three times during its period of performance. The meetings followed agendas prepared in advance that were designed to ensure a full exposure of issues related to its charter and to permit adequate discussion of these issues by the membership.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The committee was established to develop a strategic roadmap in its chartered domain based on expertise resident within and outside of NASA. A strategic roadmap is a coordinated and comprehensive longitudinal strategy that identifies key objectives and time-phased implementation elements, potential achievements, priorities, options, and decision points and criteria. The roadmap is to be subsequently used by NASA to inform decisions on scientific objectives, resource allocation, and technology investments.
