Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Space Science Advisory Committee met three to four times a year to receive updates of current activities in NASA's Office of Space Science (OSS) and to provide recommendations on the evolving issues connected with OSS's programs. SScAC's members were highly respected experts who represented a broad cross section of the space science communities--Sun-Earth Connection, Astronomical Search for Origins and Planetary Systems, Structure and Evolution of the Universe, and Solar System Exploration--and who are drawn from the range of US research institutions involved in space science programs and relevant technology and education programs. The issues, concerns, and advice of the individual science disciplines are brought to SScAC, which integrates their inputs.
How is membership balanced?*The membership was balanced with appropriate individuals who represent each of the program areas in the space science: Sun-Earth Connection, Astronomical Search for Origins and Planetary Systems, Structure and Evolution of the Universe, and Solar System Exploration. Members were chosen for their expertise in the specific program area they represent or for general expertise common to the individual program areas. They represented university research programs, nationally prominent research institutions, NASA centers, and other relevant government agencies. They were leaders in their field and functioned as expert advisors. Members served from two to three years and were rotated off the committee and subcommittees to allow for new members to bring in fresh ideas and new points of view.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The SScAC met three to four times annually, and the four subcommittees each met two to three times per year. These meetings, scheduled throughout the year, provided timely responses to issues affecting NASA space science programs. Subcommittees attempted to schedule their meetings prior to the full SScAC so that they were prepared to report findings and recommendations to the parent group.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The make-up of the membership chosen to serve on the committee and subcommittees were individuals who are experts in their fields. They were highly qualified to provide space science advice and support at the highest level to the Science Mission Directorate and its relevant discipline program offices. There was not another group with the experience and insight to advise NASA regarding research and programmatic issues in all areas of space science on an ongoing basis.
Why close or partially close meetings?N/A
Recommendation RemarksThis advisory committee was terminated as part of the overall NASA advisory committee restructuring effort that took place during 2005.
