Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

Agency Recommendation*Terminate
Legislation to Terminate RequiredNo
Legislation StatusEnacted
How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Nuclear Systems Strategic Roadmap Committee was established to provide advice and recommendations to NASA regarding the programmatic development and utilization of space nuclear power systems for space exploration.
How is membership balanced?*Membership was balanced across expertise (spacecraft design, mission design, nuclear systems design) and geographic location and institution type (industry, government, academia and east, south, central and west).
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Estimated number of meetings per year - 4. Actual meetings held - 2.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The committee was deemed necessary to the public interest in connection with the Agency's performance of its duties under the law. Nuclear systems are an identified need for future exploration activities and the investment in bringing these systems to maturity for space exploration would be significant. Recommendations provided by the committee would have contributed to Agency program prioritization, budget formulation, facilities and human capital planning and to technology investment.
Why close or partially close meetings?
Recommendation RemarksThis committee was terminated at the direction of the NASA Administrator.

Agency Feedback Comment*NANarrative Description*Future NASA missions are predicted to require high-power, long-lived, efficient energy technologies to support human and robotic missions. Currently, NASA missions to the outer solar system are hampered by lack of power - specifically solar power - while human missions to the moon or Mars will require much higher power systems than currently available. To meet these goals, NASA is considering advanced nuclear power systems to enable extended human and robotic exploration. The Nuclear Systems Strategic Roadmap Committee was established to provide guidance on strategic planning for advanced nuclear power systems development.
