How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee directly advises key officials of the U.S. Treasury Department, the U.S. Customs Service, and other Executive agencies, on measures to enhance the effectiveness of enforcment of the import prohibition on merchandise manufactured in foreign countries with forced or indentured child labor. The Committee recommends avenues of investigation and information resources regarding child labor overseas. This Committee is an important part of our initiative to combat child laborIssues:1. Update on Customs' Enforcement Program2. Legislative Update 2000 (Amendments to Legislation and Regulations)3. Finalized the Red Flags Advisory
How is membership balanced?*The Committee members have been selected to create a balance between child labor and worker rights advocates on the one hand and responsible industry representatives on the other. The membership includes representatives of nonprofit organizations, a labor union, academia, private corporations, and trade associations.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The meetings will be held quarterly at the Treasury Department in Washington and constitute a critical forum for exchange of views among the members and between the membership and the relevant government agencies.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The Committee is intended to create a partnership between Executive agencies, labor and human rights advocacy groups, industry representatives, and the public in order to promote effective enforcement of the law and to further the President's commitment.
