Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*This panel provided recommendations regarding the scientific quality of over 250 proposals related to a wide range of life sciences activities. As a result of the panel recommendations, funds were provided both for capital acquisition of instrumentation and for development of new instruments that would benefit research capabilities throughout the entire life sciences community. Biophysics, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, marine biology, systematics and plant biology were among the disciplinary areas supported. Of the proposals reviewed about 30% were funded.
How is membership balanced?*Efforts are made to maintain the balance of the panel across a number of dimensions, Primary among these is the requisite balance of scientific expertise appropriate to the mix of areas represented by the proposals. Within that structure, balance is maintained with regard to geographical, gender, relative seniority and institutional dimensions. Continuing efforts are made to improve balance with regard to ethnic minority status. Representatives of both large and small institutions are sought, as well as several scientists from for-profit corporations.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Meetings are held three -four times a year. Since proposals arriving throughout the year may compete for funds from the same budget, continuance of the panel is essential to fair and equitable decision-making as to which proposals are supported and which are declined.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The breadth of expertise required for fair peer evaluation of the variety of proposals received transcends the ability of the NSF staff, so outside advice from practicing life scientists is essential, and is also critical for effective long-range planning. No other source would provide a comparable final product, independent of cost.
Why close or partially close meetings? To review proposals that included information or a proprietary or confidential nature, including technical information; financial data such as salaries; and personal information concerning individuals associated with the proposals.
