Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Advisory Panel reviewed and evaluated 731 proposals which included dissertation research proposals. The proposals were ranked by the panel according to their scientific merit into four groups Must Fund, Should Fund, Fundable, and Decline. The panel's ranking is the single most important piece of information in the decision to recommend funding or declining a proposal. The panels also discuss policy issues and new developments in the fields of anthropological and geographic sciences such as human genome diversity and ecological analysis and synthesis research.
How is membership balanced?*The Advisory Panel consists of men and women throughout the United States with expertise in the major sub-disciplines of physical anthropology, human paleontology, human anatomy/osteology, anthropological genetics, primate behavior, and human biology/physiology. The Panel is also balanced on the basis of their expertise to cover all major regions of the world and time periods and includes archaeologists, archaeoletist, museology experts, and experts in behavioral ecology, economic anthropology, psychological anthropology, medical anthropology who serve as generalists in promoting scientific progress in all areas of cultural anthropology.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The panel met thirteen times this fiscal year, six in the Fall and seven in the Spring. Review panels are extremely important since they compare and contrast individual proposals, ranking them according to their general scientific merit. They also advise NSF on patterns of funding and new research opportunities, to help NSF accomplish its goal of advancing science in the particular research areas.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*No other panel or group exists with the necessary range of expertise. Given the wide range of proposals received in each competition and the difficulty in judging among them, such panels are essential for the wise expenditure of federal funds. Mail-in reviewers who do not see the full range of proposals tend to be biased in favor of their personal research agendas. Specialists tend to over-weigh the descriptive value of proposals and under-weigh the value of the research design and methodology. No other established panel has the expertise to advise NSF on how to advance the anthropological and geographic sciences.
Why close or partially close meetings? To review proposals that included information of a proprietary or confidential nature, including technical information; financial data such as salaries; and personal information concerning individuals associated with the proposals.
