Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The cluster consists of two sub-areas; Molecular Biophysics and Molecular Biochemistry. Since many more research proposals are received than can be funded, the panel provides essential advice in evaluating the scientific merit of proposals relative to each other. The panel is composed of experts in each of the sub-disciplines. Their input provides the information necessary for the Cluster to fund the best science in these areas. The panel evaluates between 400-450 proposals per year. The panel also gives advice to the Cluster about emerging areas of research, information important to long range planning.
How is membership balanced?*Each panel is carefully chosen to reflect the wide range of scientific areas covered by the sub-areas of the Cluster. These include animal, plant and microbial biochemists, molecular biologists, structural biologists, biophysicists, and theoreticians. Every effort is made to achieve representation with regard to gender, minority, junior and senior scientists, geographical distribution, undergraduate and graduate institutions, and industry participation.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Meetings of each of the two subareas are generally held twice a year. These meetings assure investigators that proposals will be reviewed in a timely manner; the goal is that a decision be made no more than six months after receipt of a proposal.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The information provided by the panels allows the Program Directors to make rational and objective decisions by providing evaluations of the relative merit and importance of the projects to the advancement of the field. Ad hoc reviews are also solicited; however, input by the panel is critical in that only by seeing all of the proposals can their comparative merit be assessed.
Why close or partially close meetings? To review proposals that included information or a proprietary or confidential nature, including technical information; financial data such as salaries; and personal information concerning individuals associated with the proposals.
