Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Cell Biology Cluster supports research on the function of the structural components of the cell, and the mechanisms and regulation of providing and responding to information received by the cell. The Cell Biology advisory panel reviews and evaluates the proposals, and aids the Cluster in deciding which proposals are most deserving of funding taking into consideration the importance of the research to cell biology. The panel also provides advice in developing priorities and long range plans. The panel reviews between 300-360 research proposals per year.
How is membership balanced?*The panel is composed of scientists with expertise in the various areas of science which are reviewed by the Cluster, including function and assembly of cellular components, dynamics and control of cell division, intracellular trafficking, and response of cells to stimuli including various signaling mechanisms. To ensure a balanced view, the membership of the panel includes representatives from small colleges as well as state and private universities, junior and well-established faculty members, women, minority scientists, and scientists from various regions of the country.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The Cell Biology Panel is comprised of two sections each of which meets twice a year in order to help assure timely processing of proposals.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The panel, by discussing all proposals at one time, is able to provide a relative evaluation of the proposals and also to reconcile any unusual or discrepant reviewer comments. Moreover, since the panelists are active scientists, they are able to recognize new and significant ideas and provide such advice to the Program Directors. By meeting periodically, a substantial proposal load can be dealt with in both an effective and timely manner.
Why close or partially close meetings? To review proposals that included information or a proprietary or confidential nature, including technical information; financial data such as salaries; and personal information concerning individuals associated with the proposals.
