Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Biomolecular Processes Cluster supports research in two sub-areas of biochemistry: Metabolic Biochemistry and the Biochemistry of Gene Expression (formerly Biochemical Genetics). Since many more research proposals are received than can be supported, the panel provides essential advice to the Program Director about which proposals are most deserving of funding based on their relative and intrinsic scientific merit. The panel also provides timely information about newly emerging areas of biochemistry research, and advice essential for long range scientific planning. The panel consists of scientific experts from each biochemistry sub-area, and evaluates 300-400 proposals per year.
How is membership balanced?*The panel is composed of scientists with expertise in microbial, plant or animal biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics. Every effort is made to achieve a balanced membership with respect to junior and senior scientists, gender, minority and disability status, geographical location, and undergraduate and graduate academic institutions.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Panel meetings are held twice a year for each of the two biochemistry sub-areas in order to assure a timely review of the proposals. The goal is to achieve no more than a six month interval between the receipt of a proposal and a decision.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*By discussing a group of proposals at one time (including consideration of ad hoc reviews from scientists not on the panel), the panel is able to provide the Program Director with a balanced evaluation of the relative scientific merit of each proposal and its importance to the advancement of the field, and to reconcile any discrepancies in the scientific reviews. The panel's advice is essential to the Program Director in making informed decisions about funding. Panel members also identify and advise the Program Director about significant new areas of research. Periodic meetings distribute the substantial proposal load into units that can be managed in an effective and timely manner.
Why close or partially close meetings? To review proposals that included information of a proprietary or confidential nature, including technical information; financial data, such as salaries; and personal information concerning individuals associated with the proposals.
Recommendation RemarksTo review proposals that included information of a proprietary or confidential nature, including technical information; financial data, such as salaries; and personal information concerning individuals associated with the proposals.
