Committee Detail

Note: An Annual Comprehensive Review, as required by §7 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is conducted each year on committee data entered for the previous fiscal year (referred to as the reporting year). The data for the reporting year is not considered verified until this review is complete and the data is moved to history for an agency/department. See the Data From Previous Years section at the bottom of this page for the committee’s historical, verified data.

Details on agency responses to committee recommendations can be found under the Performance Measures section for each committee in the fields “Agency Feedback” and “Agency Feedback Comment.”

How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*Over the past year, the panel for the Ecological Studies Cluster evaluated and made funding recommendations on approximately 440 proposals. The recommendations of the panel provided critical guidance to the Cluster in making award decisions.
How is membership balanced?*The panel consists of approximately 80 persons selected from the scientific community so as to be reasonably representative of subspeciality competence within Ecology and Ecosystem Studies. The different types and sizes of institutions having research programs in Ecology and Ecosystem Studies and representational balance by gender, race and geographical regions in the United States are also taken into consideration in panelist selection.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The panel met four times in FY 01. The Cluster has two pending target dates per fiscal year for the foreseeable future. The number of proposal submissions continues to increase as funding availability remains limited. Continuation of the panels will assist the Cluster in allocating scarce resources for the support of basic ecological research.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*The panel is a forum for frank and candid exchange among experts on the various sub-elements of ecological studies that provides crucial advice to the program officers in discharging their responsibility of supporting the proposals with the greatest potential for maintaining the health of ecology and ecosystem studies.
Why close or partially close meetings? To review proposals that included information of a proprietary or confidential nature, including technical information; financial data, such as salaries; and personal information concerning individuals associated with the proposals.
