How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*	The Hanford Thyroid Morbidity Study Advisory Committee was established to provide advice and guidance to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding the scientific merit and direction of the Hanford Thyroid Morbidity Study. The Committee monitored compliance with the study protocol, recommended changes of scientific merit to CDC, and advised on the feasibility of conducting a full epidemiologic study among Indian tribes and the reporting of final study results.
How is membership balanced?*	The Committee had an authorized membership of seven public members who were highly knowledgeable in the fields of radiation dose reconstruction, thyroid disease, epidemiology, Indian affairs, environmental issues, and a community representative. The Committee also included a nonvoting liaison representative from the Hanford Downwinders Coalition, an organization that played an important role in interacting and coordinating citizen activities relating to Hanford operations.
