How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The commission recommended a specific set of actions that will advance the full and equitable participation of all Americans in SET education; increase the number of qualified American scientists, engineers, and technicians by expanding the human resources pool of women, members of racial and ethnic minority groups, and persons with diabilities; and enhance the Nation's economic capacity and technological growth in this era of global competitiveness. The recommendations are directed toward policies and programs that can be implemented by the Congress, federal departments and agencies, state governments, private enterprise, nonprofit organizations, and education institutions. From the information received during the public hearing meetings and other resources, the Commission's final report to the President, member of Congress, and the 50 governors focuses on effective strategies to improve the recruitment, retention, and representation of women, minorities, and persons with disabilities in science, engineering, and technology education and employment.
How is membership balanced?*All scientific, mathematical, engineering, and educational backgrounds are represented; members of underrepresented groups are incuded on the commission, and persons from academe and professional associations are present on the commission.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*During FY 2000 the commission held two public hearing meetings. During these meetings, commissioners compiled information on the barriers to the recruitmemt, retention, and advancement of women and minorities in the fields of science, engineering and technology. The compiled information will be submitted to The President, Congress, and the highest executive offical of each State in a written report containing the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the Commission.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*Technology has transformed almost every sector of our economy. The shift from the industrial age to the information age brings with it the need for an increased pool of highly skilled workers trained in all areas of science, engineering, and technology. However, women, minorities, and persons with disabilities continue to be underrepresented in these fields, thus reducing the pool of highly skilled workders. In order to ensure that our economy continues to flourish during this information age, the need exists to identify the underlying factors that contribute to the relative lack of representation of these groups in the science, engineering, and technology fields.
Why close or partially close meetings?
