How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*	The Committee continued to review plans for Census 2000 and provided input into ongoing operations that could be used for the evaluation of Census 2000 operations. The Committee provided recommendations based on Census Bureau presentations on a broad range of issues including post-census research, recruitment, and the advertising campaign. For example: 1) the Committee recommended that the Census Bureau produce the We, the American ... series of data products due to the importance of the data to the Asian and Pacific Islander populations, 2) worked with the Census Bureau on its hiring policy of permanent residents from non-allied nations which the Committee believed could seriously affect linguistically isolated communities. Based on their recommendation the Census Bureau clarified their hiring policy and reviewed their training sessions at the Regional Offices, and 3) recommended that the Census Bureau make an active effort to recruit and hire more Asian Pacific Islanders partnership specialists. Based on the Committee's recommendation, the Census Bureau increased the number of partnership specialists hired in communities with significant Asian and Pacific Islander populations.
How is membership balanced?*	The Census Advisory Committee on Asian and Pacific Islander Populations consists of 13 members; the subcommittee on the Asian Population has 8 members, the subcommittee on the Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander Populations has 5 members. The members represent the ethnic and geographic diversity of the Asian and Pacific Islander population in the United States. The members are selected from communities or localities with high concentrations of Asians and Pacific Islanders.
