How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee provides advice to the President and the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Office on matters related to the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative (Initiative). The purposes of the Initiative are: (1) ensuring continued United States leadership in artificial intelligence research and development; (2) leading the world in the development and use of trustworthy artificial intelligence systems in the public and private sectors; (3) preparing the present and future United States workforce for the integration of artificial intelligence systems across all sectors of the economy and society; and (4) coordinating ongoing artificial intelligence research, development, and demonstration activities among the civilian agencies, the Department of Defense, and the Intelligence Community to ensure that each informs the work of the others.
How is membership balanced?*Members of the Committee are appointed by the Secretary of Commerce. The Committee represents broad and interdisciplinary expertise and perspectives, including academic institutions, companies across diverse sectors, nonprofit and civil society entities, including civil rights and disability rights and organizations, and Federal laboratories, who represent geographic diversity, who are qualified to provide advice and information on science and technology research, development, ethics, standards, education, technology, commercial application, security, and economic competitiveness related to artificial intelligence.

In selecting members of the Committee, the Secretary of Commerce has given consideration to recommendations from Congress, industry, nonprofit organizations, the scientific community (including the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, scientific professional societies, and academic institutions), the defense and law enforcement communities and other appropriate organizations. How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*The NAIAC is statutorily required to meet twice a year. In FY25, the NAIAC met four times. The Committee meetings included briefing sessions with experts as well as deliberations on recommendations and various documents.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*Section 5104 of the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act of 2020 (Pub.L.No 116-283) states that the Secretary of Commerce, in consultation with the Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of Energy, the Secretary of State, the Attorney General, and the Director of National Intelligence shall establish the "National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee" in accordance with the Federal Advisory Committee Act, as amended (FACA), 5 U.S.C. § 1001 et seq.

The recommendations that are adopted by the administration are tracked and shared at select NAIAC meetings and published reports posted online. Membership numbers fell below the required minimum outlined in the Committee charter for over half of the fiscal year. NIST management activity continued, however, as research, outreach, and vetting of new candidates took place.
