How does cmte accomplish its purpose?*The Committee provides direct advisory recommendations to the National Volcano Early Warning System (NVEWS) Management team that currently consists of the Volcano Hazards Program Coordinator, the Volcano Science Center Director, a soon to be hired NVEWS Project Manager (this position will reside within the Volcano Science Center) , and an NVEWS Coordinator to be hired at a future date in the Volcano Hazards Program Office. NVEWS Management Team will make final decisions on recommendations from the Committee and effective utilization of appropriated funds for NVEWS implementation.
How is membership balanced?*Individuals are qualified in the appropriate fields. Selection of individuals to serve on the NVEWSAC shall be based on established records of distinguished service, ensuring a reasonable cross-section of views, experience, expertise, and diversity is represented.
How frequent & relevant are cmte mtgs?*Meetings will be held once per year in initial three years of NVEWS implementation, but may be held twice per year starting in 2026.
Why advice can't be obtained elsewhere?*Implementation of NVEWS by USGS will require close coordination with high level representatives of other Federal agencies that manage the lands where the high threat and very high threat volcanoes of the U.S. are located. Therefore, it is essential to have representatives from the National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service. Unlike other natural hazards, explosive volcanic eruptions can have significant impacts upon commercial and military aviation operations for tens of thousands of miles downwind of the source. Therefore, it is essential to have high-level representation on this committee from the Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, National Weather Service, 557th Weather Wing of the Department of Defense. Also needed on this committee are high level representatives from other federal science agencies that already play a role in volcano monitoring such as NOAA, NSF, NASA, and for instrumentation calibration and response verification, NIST.
Why close or partially close meetings?Meetings are open.
Recommendation RemarksOne meeting was held in FY 2025.
